The Estate and Walks

Spreacombe Estate is private but as our holiday guests we would love you to enjoy our outdoor spaces as much as we do.

Bring your walking boots, camera, binoculars and plan on wandering around as part of your holiday.

If you are staying with us, please ask for details about our local walks.

Please note, RPSB Chapel Wood is open to the public, the fields on either side belong to Spreacombe Estate.

As the seasons change and the farming and forestry activities differ, different areas of the Estate become more and less accessible.

I will update this section as we open.

1. To Chapel Wood (RSPB Bird Sanctuary and chapel remains)

and round the Chapel Wood circular walk. – about 40 minutes without stops.

Well worth a trip.  There are steep steps in the woodland circular walk but the chapel remains are at the base of the hill and so can be enjoyed without negotiating the steps.

- Leave the bungalows by the small gate near to Fuschia and head towards the nearby white cottage.

- Go into the field via the large gate near to the cottage and turn left. Stay near to the top of the field.

- Just past the Manor House turn right through the gate and follow the fence line to Chapel Wood.

2. Across Mill Meadow to the ponds

                       - about 15 mins one way to the big pond

These 2 ponds were renovated in Autumn 2013 and walks cleared around them.

- Leave the bungalows by the small gate near to Fuschia and head towards the nearby white cottage.

- Go into the field via the large gate near to the cottage and turn left. Stay near to the top of the field.

- Just past the Manor House walk through the field gate and   keep walking across the second meadow. You are heading for a pedestrian gate into the wooded area at the end of the field. The ponds are in the wood.

Once at the larger pond the options are to continue to the smaller one and walk around them both ending up near the roadside entrance to Chapel Wood and back through the fields or to head left to our driveway. The paths are mown so directionally easy to follow. Please be aware that the ponds are deep.

3. A stroll up the stony lane   (entrance pictured)

(by Spreacombe Gardens entrance) towards Spreacombe Lodge and back again. Distance to suit.

This is a farm track with practically no traffic, but please do look out for the odd cyclist and farm vehical.     An area of woodland near the top of the path was felled in 2012. We have replanted with conifers but they are still tiny. It will be many years before this looks like a wood again.

- Turn left out of the main Spreacombe Gardens entrance and follow the track.

5. Walk to Woolacombe – for the more adventurous.

It takes about 90 mins ?  each way and there is a hill to negotiate on the way home.

The walking maps displayed on the wall (some properties) cost £2 – available from many local shops such as Georgeham Post office, J&S Wensley Newsagents, Braunton (by entrance to Caen Street Carpark) and Woolacombe T.I.

Woolacombe T.I is in partnership with the National Trust so will have information about the cliff walks in the area, as does the NT website. An example is https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/trails/morte-point-and-bull-point-walk
